Santa!!! I know HIM.............

I love to think of Buddy the elf when he talks about Santa. Santa is definitely his hero. I need to keep re-quoting Elf until I buy the movie myself. I love it, and yet, don't own it. One of my favorite Christmas movies for sure. Probably my favorite Christmas movie.

"Buddy the elf, what's your favorite color?"

"Is there sugar in syrup? Then, yes, I do."

"Watch out for the yellow ones. They are not nice."

Ok, for real. I am done. Someone please buy my the movie stop me already.

All this Elf talk has me thinking about Santa. (Santa's Coming.....I KNOW HIM......you are not Santa.....oh yeah, then what did you sing me on my birthday last year?) ok, really, I am done. Really.

This time of year brings up a lot of discussion about Christians and Santa and whether or not Christians should celebrate Santa, and have their kids believe in Santa. Unashamedly I am a Santa believer, and will be Santa to my children.

I have fond memories of waking up on Christmas morning, wondering where all of those presents came from. My parents did an AMAZING job of being Santa. Santa had different handwriting, different wrapping paper, only half ate cookies because he had a lot to eat that night, carrots were left for reindeer and we would find them out in the yard. Mom and Dad would ring bells outside as if Santa was landing on the roof. It was wonderful and magical.

And you know what?

I love Jesus. So very much. He is everything to me and I intend to keep Him the center of our family during Christmas time. We bought Caleb a Little People Nativity set. I have been going through the characters with him, teaching him (at a two year old level) who each character is, and what role they play in the story. For instance, the wise men come and bring Jesus (THE SAVIOR OF THE WORLD---said in a really loud excited voice) birthday presents, and then Caleb and I sing Happy Birthday to Jesus. We have this amazing book, and we are reading him the nativity story. I want my son to grow up and celebrate Jesus. This is what this season is about. We will be reading the Christmas story on Christmas Eve and will celebrate the birth of Jesus.  But, oh the magic of Santa!!

Our family will be a Santa family. (Still convincing Jon on this, not because he is not a Santa believer, but because he is not a gift giver). I want Christmas to have that magical feeling!

Like my friend Wendi said, Don't judge me, I won't judge you. I love Santa. Everything about him. Here's why:

1. On a very personal level, Santa in no ways hampered my love and devotion of Jesus, made me a more materialistic person or took my focus off the Savior. It was a time of childhood magic, receiving gifts (which is my love language) and celebrating with family.

2. We, as believers are to be in the world. Let's come alongside of the world during a materialistic time and hold the nativity and Santa in balance. It doesn't need to be either or.

3. Santa teaches mercy and grace. It is not about "checking the naughty list." Now yes, elves on the shelves and telling kids that Santa is watching their behavior may result in good behavior for a time, but let's be honest. Kids are kids. They are going to fail. They are going to misbehave. What a chance to teach mercy and grace. Mercy: not getting what you do deserve. Grace: Getting what we don't deserve. What parent buys presents for their kids and never gives it to them? What a great chance to talk about when we mess up, we fall, we seek Jesus ask forgiveness and He grants it. Santa is a tangible example. We mess up. We are sorry, Santa still gives gifts. Who knew? Theology in Santa!

4. The word Santa is not derived from the word Satan. It is most likely derived from the word Saint. And we know that Saint Nickolas was a real man, a giving and generous man. Why not use this as a time to teach about giving the way the original Saint Nickolas gave, and in turn, your kids can be blessed with some gifts as well. Teaching our kids about Santa does not take away from the nativity, but rather Santa exemplifies the grace, mercy, the generosity of the nativity.

5. It is a great lesson that we don't get what we want, and we don't always NEED what we want. This is where us as parents can bless our kids with some material possessions, but to say no to over-excess, no to  frivolous spending and attitudes that will make our children spoiled. There were times that Santa did not give me what I wanted, or gave me something that I did not want. Somehow, this was more justifiable when a relative gave me an unwanted gift, but Santa? He knew what I wanted, and didn't come through. It taught me that Christmas is not about what I get, but the joy in which I celebrate. The moment at which it becomes about me, I have lost the focus.

This is not a post to create arguments. I know that there are readers of this blog that disagree, some very close friends. I just wanted to share my excitement for the season and give some reasons as to why we do what we do.

When our children start asking questions about Santa, we will tell them the story of Saint Nikolas and how his legacy lives on today. And when doubts enter minds, Mom and Dad will work at ringing those sleigh bells outside on Christmas eve.

We will take our kiddos to visit Santa and add it to the scrapbooks.

We will talk about the nativity and what it means for us that Jesus came as a human being, just so He could die on the cross.

That is why He came right? No, I am not mixing my holidays up. He came to die. Generosity. Grace. Mercy.

And Santa is certainly a good present day parable to represent that mercy and grace.

Traditions

As we celebrate our first Christmas as a family of three, I can't help but think about Christmas traditions. What do we want to be doing this year and have as an ongoing tradition for Caleb to experience and to celebrate with us?

Here are some family traditions that we keep:

Christmas Eve: It starts off early. The sisters and my dad get up before it is light out and head to the HoneyBaked Ham Store, wait in line in the freezing cold to get a scrumptious ham. Once we get the ham we do some last minute shopping with all the crazies:)  ALWAYS going to church, a beautiful candle light, worshipful, musical setting to celebrate Jesus. We come back to my parents house and have hor'durves and wine. Every year we open up 1 gift--Christmas pajamas.Mom always gets a Santa on Christmas Eve. She is collecting them and has some beautiful ones. Maybe I should take some pictures of them this year, Wendi?  All 3 sisters sleep in the same bed waiting for Santa to arrive. Yes, I even have done this since moving out, getting married, and being 26 years old. I doubt that this year will be any different.

Christmas Day: crazy frenzy!!! No one is allowed to go into the family room until mom and dad say it is ok. When we walk in, Christmas music is always playing with gifts galore. No really, Toy's R Us looks poor compared to Santa coming to our house. I will prove it this year:) My mom is a little excited about Christmas shopping. Anyways, we open our stockings and then we get to the gifts....one person at a time. Mom always gets a calendar. We clean up the mess and head up to grandma and grandpa's house (10 minutes away) where we have breakfast with them, my great aunt, my aunt and uncle and cousins. We always have eggs, toast, coffee and cinnamon rolls. Every. Year. Fabulous. After breakfast we open more stockings.Well, the stockings at grandma's are actually gift bags.  And more gifts. Then we clean up the mess and go back to my parents house...and clean up more....and then take a nap. After our naps....we get ready for Christmas dinner, then eat the Christmas dinner and then end up having some great quality family time.

This year: I want to read the Christmas story to my son with my husband. I want to pray and worship together. And...ofcourse, all of the other amazing great traditions!!!

What traditions do you have???

(REPOST) A baby for Christmas

Many of you have been walking this journey with us. The journey of pursuing Jesus through adoption. The journey of caring for orphans. The journey of heartbreak. The journey of trust. This blog is a repost from last year at this time. My how things have changed.

*********************************************************************************************

Selfishly, I want to throw a giant pity party for myself--and you would be invited. But I'm not, so you don't need to post it on your calendar:) I thought I would save you all some trouble.

All I wanted for Christmas was a baby. A baby that had no home. I wanted to dress this baby up in Christmas dress clothes, take Christmas pictures and send out family Christmas cards, from the 3 of us. Right now, there is an ache in my heart as I celebrate Christmas with my family of 2 instead.

I don't know why we don't have a baby this Christmas. I don't know why God chose to close this door. I don't know why this is not the Christmas that I will become a proud mama.

But there is a baby.

A baby that brought hope.

A baby that brought reconciliation.

A baby that brought redemption.

A baby that brought peace.

A baby that grew up to give His life for me

A baby that was born fully man and fully God.

And because of that baby, I can celebrate Christmas.

Blogworthy

Maybe you have to know my family. Or maybe just my dad. Or maybe this letter really is the example of cheese. Whatever the reason, I about died reading the Christmas letter my parents sent out, so....here it is for all my blog friends to read:

Hard the Herald Watt Angels Sing...We certainly have a lot to be singing about this year. With 2 new additions to the family we need to make room at the in. Kristin and Jon will no longer be having Silent Nights at their household. They received a call from (name) Adoption Agency  on the 9th of January. They did not have to ask What Child Is This, they knew it was the child that God wanted them to raise and provide for. After 6 weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit, at (hospital) in (city). It Became Upon a Midnight Clear that Caleb Robert (CJ) would be going home with his mom and dad. Everything became "official" on Monday November 15th in (city). Kathy was so excited and overcome with emotion it was almost like Grandma got run over by a reindeer.

In October We Heard the Bells not on Christmas Day but on Jenna's wedding day. Jenna married Nolan on Oct. 2 at Tullymore Golf Club in Canadian Lakes. Jenna has been singing Joy to the World because in May she graduated and is now an RN at Port Huron Hospital in the maternity ward. She gets the opportunity almost on a daily basis to wrap babies in swaddling clothes. Nolan is working towards becoming a golf pro and is currently working at The Elks Golf Course. Jon is excited because all he wants for Christmas is someone to help him with his golf game.

Now, unto the Littlest Angel, our Jalissa Joy to the World. She keeps us busy attending all of her activities. Jalissa is still involved with travel softball, pitching lessons, no add a fall volleyball schedule and a new love...basketball. Jalissa is a freshmen at St. Clair High School and is very in involved in all aspects of the high school life. she is even coaching the "little angels" at Biddy Basketball on Saturday mornings.

Kathy continues to Deck the Halls at Crull Elementary School in Port Huron. She is in her 27th year of teaching 2nd grade. Kathy loves being a grandma and hanging out with Grandpa.

Grandpa Jon was downsized in January. And even though the weather outside if frightful, God continues to be delightful. Jon has been working on getting licensed and certified in the health insurance industry. Jon is a senior market advisor working for himself and helping seniors make sense of the new health care changes that have taken place over the past 12 months. Jon is also coaching JV Girls Basketball at St. Clair High School.

We look forward to hearing from each of you,
We wish you a merry Christmas!

Raindrops on Roses and Whiskers on Kittens (These are a FEW of my FAVORITE things)

Hands down, my husband is high on the list, just behind Jesus on my list of favorite things. He is an amazing man, my best friend, greatest support and just plain fun. Get to know him. :)

Gods Word: I love the way that God speaks to me through His word. It is living and active and I am so privileged to be able to study it, to teach it and to learn it. May this year be another year of digging deep into the Word and growing my depth of knowledge of the Word and the Lord.

Adoption: Follow this blog, and you will see why adoption is one of my favorite things

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship: Not only my employer, but an organization that has amazing staff and a God given mission to reach the college campus for the kingdom. InterVarsity has been so transformational in my spiritual development, far more than I can share in a hodge podge blog. Would you like a post later on it?

Journals, healthy cooking and Jodi Piccoult: If you can't find me, chances are, I am in a quiet place journaling. I LOVE LOVE LOVE journaling, it has been one of the most healthy things I can do. Jodi Piccoult=my favorite fiction author. I like to cook healthy, just don't do much of it.

"Smelling" Products: Perfume, cleaning products, candles, air fresheners....anything. Here is some of my loot from Christmas. I am so excited for my new Burberry Perfume and Very Sexy Perfume!!!

Scarves and Accessories: LOVE THEM ALL, ALL THE TIME. Here is what I was given for Christmas to add to my collection of accessories.

Kohl's Panera Bread and Victoria Secret: And with a love for these, what is better than gift cards to those places?

PURSES!!!: I have a new miche bag skin!!! Yeah, I love them. And a great pink wallet.

If you know me at all, you know I am addicted to taking pictures.....and new from Christmas....a camera to throw in my purse (because my other one is too big) and a video camera!!!! Watch out folks.....

My husband cooking: This is some of the cooking stuff he got this Christmas--fajita grilling set, oven board, beer butt chicken, and Jim Beam marinades. Who is coming over for dinner?

There are so many more "favorite things," but this is the list you get for now:)
